Summer 2012 Tour - The Sword in the Stone

Ancient British legends take to the road this summer as Cambridge Touring Theatre brings its lively and hilarious outdoor production of The Sword in the Stone
to some of the most picturesque spots in the country.
Based on the age-old stories of King Arthur and his wise teacher, Merlin (as told by T H White and Walt Disney), this brand new version includes songs, dances and interactive fun, all presented by a cast bursting with energy and enthusiasm.

The story begins as Merlin searches for a new pupil.
He chooses a local boy named Wart and they set off for the Tournament in London. On the way, Wart learns important lessons about how to be just and wise. When they arrive, the biggest competition at the tournament is the Sword in the Stone pulling contest… but who will win and become Ruler of England?

For children who want to get even more involved, the company offers 45 minute drama workshops before most performances. Here children aged 5-10 years can explore the story of The Sword in the Stone, take part in their own knightly adventures and meet some of the characters from the play.

Cambridge Touring Theatre has been touring professionally all over Britain since 2000. Every performance features six actors, a musician and a colourful stage which turns magically into medieval caravans, carts and courts. The performers - all trained actors with experience in family events - play with the original story and bring it to life for children of today. They sing, they dance, they steal sandwiches and they even spray viewers with water! In short, they lose no opportunity to delight and
entertain all ages.
This group of dedicated performers is headed up by Rosie Humphreys, who moved to Cambridge after working for the English National Opera in London. She has a passionate commitment to introducing theatre to families. “My own love of the theatre began seeing outdoor touring companies playing classic
stories in beautiful settings,” she says. “Add a picnic and a rug and there’s no better way to spend a
summer day.”

The outdoor theatre event is taking place on Saturday, July 28, gates open from 5.30pm and the performance starts at 6pm. (£12 Adult, £9 Child, Under 3’s free).

Before the performance at 4.30pm there is also a 45 drama workshop suitable for children between 5-11 years. (£4.50 per child).

Bring along a picnic, enjoy the spectacular surroundings and prepare to be entertained - whatever the weather!
